If there were an Oscar for indie adventure films, Bruce 'Buck' Nelson would be a runaway winner. . . Alone Across Alaska: 1,000 Miles of Wilderness, is one of the best Alaska travel documentaries we've seen. . . It's a natural history lesson, a short course on solo backpacking, and a poignant reminder of the blinding beauty in America's wilderness. . . a do-it-yourself masterpiece, with steady camerawork and smart, spare narrative. The alpine scenery is unbeatable, but it's overshadowed by the endless parade of in-your-face wildlife encounters: wolves and wolf pups, dall sheep, musk ox, caribou, and grizzly sows and cubs. . . the grizzly scenes made us sweat.

In the end, Nelson's home movie is a moving tribute to the Brooks Range and an amazing record of what a solo hiker can accomplish. But more than anything, it's a powerful reminder that, despite reports to the contrary, raw and wild North American wilderness is still very, very much alive. ----Steve Howe, Backpacker Magazine
